She was still in primary school when she started taking money from my purse. I knew she was buying junk food and CDs with it. She was very happy! I’ve always treated Serene like my daughter. So my money is her money. I never told her I knew. I remember when she was still a baby. She was always crying! I made sure I was by her side all the time. I would suck mucus out of her nose, so she wouldn’t choke. When she started school, I cried! Because my darling was crying too. I miss the days when we would go out and play. I planted a jackfruit tree in the backyard. When it became bigger, I taught Serene how to climb it. We would go catch tadpoles at the drain nearby, and bring it home. Now my Serene is all grown up. I’m not sure how other maids treat the children, but I love Serene like she’s my own. And when I leave Singapore, I’ll miss my darling Serene the most.
