Let us have an open heart to receive people around us.

In workplace, we are surrounded by different types of personalities. Some personalities’ traits are positive, some are negative. I realized that most of the time, we focused our attention on the negative traits of a person instead of their strength.

I remember a simple yet significant analogy which my friend shared with me – A black dot on a piece of white paper. If there is a large piece of paper with a small dot in the center, what do you see? Do you see the black dot or the white paper? Most will say “a black dot”. Most people will zoom right into the black dot and overlook the sheet of paper.

The imperfection or negative trait of a person is like the black dot on the paper. Even it is small and insignificant, people tend to focus their attention on it most of the time. Thus, they often failed to notice the good in that person.

I realized that in workplace, if we always choose to see the “small black dot” on people, there will always be blaming, issues or conflict. On the other hand, if we look at the broader picture, see on the “big white part” of people, the result is creation of a positive workplace as people feel accepted, encouraged, and appreciated. The good or bad of a person depends on our perception. We can’t change people, but we can change the way we look at them. This reminds me to look into the good of a person, rather than focus on bad or dot-like problem on them.

Let us have an open heart to receive people around us and learn to appreciate their contributions, will then be "The Best of You",

Do you see the good in people? Or the bad in people?
